Dukes Grab 5 Medals At Akron Open

Akron, Ohio - Duquesne University's women's track and field team captured five medals at the Akron Open Saturday at UA's Athletics Field House. Freshman Samantha Howard paced the Dukes with a second place finish in the mile run while senior Kristen Micsky won two bronze medals.

Howard led three Dukes in the top five finishers in the mile race with a time of 5:01.09. Juniors Elizabeth Graham and Tara Gerlach placed fourth and fifth at 5:02.59 and 5:05.93, respectively.

Micsky was third both in the high jump, with a mark of 1.64 meters (5 feet, 4.5 inches), and in the triple jump, leaping 11.52 meters or 37 feet, 9.5 inches.

Freshman Amy Ruffalo also took a bronze in the 3,000 meter race with a time of 10:05.68. And the Dukes' 4 x 400 meter relay team of senior Melissa Blackburn, junior Elena Resovich and freshmen Erica Moody and Shonte' Cook finished third with a time of 4:00.72.

Next Saturday, February 12, 2005, the Dukes head to Lewisburg, Pa. for the Bucknell Winter Classic.
