Ryan Tolan (LaVerne, Calif./Bonita), who set a school record with 12.5 sacks this season, was named to the American Football Coaches Association 2004 Division I-AA Coaches All-America team it was announced today.
Tolan is one of just four players from the Mid-Major level to earn a spot on the 25-man team. He is the second Duquesne player to ever be named to the team joining Leigh Bodden who was an AFCA All-America pick in 2001 & 2002. Bodden is currently in is second season as a defensive back for the Cleveland Browns.
Tolan, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League Defensive Player of the Year, led the 7-3 Dukes in sacks (12.5) and tackles for loss (17). He finished the season with 54 total tackles, 30 of which were solo. The LaVerne, Calif. native, who was named ECAC Defensive Player of the week once and MAAC Defensive Player of the Week two times, broke the school sack record of 9.5 set by John Wojciechowski in 1995.
The I-AA AFCA All-America team, which is the only All-America squad chosen by the nation's coaches, has been in existence since 1979.
