Shea McMillan Named to Verizon Academic Team

Duquesne University junior Shea McMillan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) has been named to the 2003 Verizon District II (2) Women's Cross Country/Track & Field first team Academic All-America team. It is McMillan's second consecutive honor as she was chosen to the 2002 squad last season.

McMillan, a four-time Atlantic 10 Academic all-conference honoree, took bronze in the triple jump, eighth as a member of the 4 x 100 relay and ninth in the long jump at the A-10 outdoor championships this past season. She helped set a new 4 x 100 Duquesne record (49.55) at Akron and a new indoor standard in the 60 meter with her time of 8.03 at the WVU Holiday Classic. A 2001-02 Verizon XC/Track & Field District II selection, she boasts a 3.78 GPA in finance.

McMillan holds DU's top performances this season in the 100 meter (12.60), triple jump and as a member of the 4 x 100 relay and placed fourth in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump at the A-10 indoor championship. She holds the Duquesne school record in the triple (38' 7.75") jump and is the former long jump record holder.

An All-Conference performer, she is a member of the Dean's List, Director of Athletics and A-10 Commissioner's Honor Rolls. McMillan reigned as the 2001-02 Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Field Performer and triple jump champion for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

McMillan will now appear on the National Cross Country/Track & Field ballot. The National team is scheduled to be released June 19.

To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve and carry at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA. District II encompasses schools from the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Duquesne University has had 21 student-athletes named to the various District II (2) teams this season placing at least one student-athlete on each of the 10 Verizon teams to date - men's & women's soccer, women's volleyball, football and men's & women's basketball, baseball, men's at-large, women's at-large, women's cross country/track & field. Duquesne's total is the most of any University in District II.
