Pittsburgh, PA - Duquesne's women's tennis team grabbed a 5-2 victory over the Villanova Wildcats Sunday at the Oxford Tennis Club. The Dukes were led by juniors Alina Klinova (Moscow, Russia / W1278) and Katie Riedinger (Plum Borough, Pa. / Plum) and sophomore Sarah Shanahan (Columbus, OH / Bishop Watterson) who each won in singles and doubles competition. Duquesne is now 5-7, 4-7 in the spring competition.
Klinova defeated Jenifer Zick 6-0, 6-3 in number one singles. Then in number two singles, Riedinger defeated Courtney Flezzani 7-6, 6-3. Shanahan picked up her fourth straight singles win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Erica Walter in the number four match. And senior Leia Zingone (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) raised her spring singles record to 3-1 as she topped Lindsey Puchyr 7-5, 6-4 in number six singles.
In doubles action, Klinova and Riedinger defeated Zick and Stepahne Ariot, 8-2, while Shanahan again teamed up with fellow classmate Julie Wagner (Erie, PA / General McLane) to top Jessie Rybacki and Kelly McAndrew, 9-7, to give the Dukes the doubles point.
The Dukes return to action on Tues. April 1 at cross-town foe Carnegie-Mellon.
