Nov. 13, 2003
Duquesne University running back Mike Hilliard (Homer City, Pa./Homer Center) and offensive tackle Ken Chambon (South Fayette, Pa./South Fayette) were named to the 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 Football Team released today.
Hilliard, a senior finance major with a 3.55 GPA, earned first team honors for the second consecutive season while Chambon, a senior reading/language arts major with a 3.30 GPA, was named to the second team for the first time. It marks the eighth consecutive season Duquesne has had at least one representative on the district team.
Hilliard, who was a Second Team Academic All-America last season, will have his name placed on the national ballot, with the 2003 Academic All-America Football Team to be released on Monday, December 1.
Hilliard enters this weekend's game versus Robert Morris 107 yards shy of the school single-season rushing yardage record. He also needs one more rushing touchdown to break the school record of 14 he currently shares with Pedro Bowman (1982). Hilliard ranks third in NCAA Division I-AA in rushing (146.8 ypg.), 7th in scoring (9.33 ppg.) and 16th in all-purpose yards (158.2 ypg.). The Homer City, Pa. native has run for 100 yards six times this season with a high game of 323 vs. La Salle on Sept. 27. The 323-yard outing, in addition to being a Duquesne school record, is the best single-game effort by any player at the I-A and I-AA levels this season. Hilliard has carried 245 times for 1,321 yards and 14 touchdowns on the year.
Chambon, a two-year starter at tackle, has helped clear the way for Hilliard by anchoring an offensive line that has enabled the Dukes average 33.3 points and 462.1 yards per game.
Duquesne (6-3, 5-0) clinched its fifth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League championship - and seventh league title in the last nine years - with a win over Saint Peter's on Oct. 18. By virtue of winning the title, the Dukes will host the Northeast Conference champion (TBA) in the ECAC Classic on Saturday, Nov. 22.
Duquesne closes out the regular season at home vs. cross-town rival Robert Morris on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Rooney Field. The Robert Morris game marks the final home game for a DU senior class that has won four consecutive league titles in compiling a 35-8 overall record.
