Lindsey Signs With Washington Redskins

April 22, 2002

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne University senior offensive tackle Steve Lindsey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) has reached a free agent agreement with the Washington Redskins and is expected to be in Washington D.C. on Thursday for a tryout with the NFL club.

"I'm as excited as can be," said the DU three-year starter. "All I can ask for is a chance. I'm living a dream right now."

Lindsey, a two-time first team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League pick, earned All-American honors from both The Sports Network and Don Hansen's Football Gazette following his senior season. Lindsey, one of DU's five captains this past year, started the last two games of his freshman year at right tackle before moving to the left side where he started every game over the last three seasons. The Dukes went 26-7-0 and won three consecutive MAAC Championships with Lindsey anchoring the offensive line.

The 6-4, 290-pound Lindsey spent Sunday near the phone in the event his name was called on the second day of the seven-round NFL draft.

"I couple of teams had shown some interest," said Lindsey. "I knew getting drafted would be a long shot." Lindsey's agent, Ralph Cindrich, worked out the deal with the Redskins.

"I knew by 8:00 p.m. where I was going," said Lindsey. "Green Bay had shown a lot of interest, but my agent felt I'd have the best opportunity in Washington. I'm just going to go down there and give it my best shot and hopefully win a contract."

Lindsey, a marketing/sports marketing major, acknowledged that his tryout will put added strain on his schoolwork. "I'm going to have to work some things out with my professors," said Lindsey, who is scheduled to graduate with his class on May 4.
