Duquesne University's Diana Stein (Powell, Ohio/Village Academy) was named the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Week for her performance in the Omni Hotels East Regional.
Ranking at no. 60 out of 128 players, Stein celebrated a victory against the no. 59 seed Diana Webb (Fairfield) with a 6-1 and 6-0 final score. Her next opponent, no. 17 Nicki Ptak (Penn) defeated Stein in the second round by scores of 6-1, 6-1 in the event. Ptak advanced to the round of 16.
The redshirt freshman is only the second Duke to advance to round two of the ITA event, the first being Mariana Gudin from the 1995 slate.
Stein completed her fall season with a mark of 3-2 at No.2 doubles and posted a 2-6 record at No. 1 singles. She was 5-8 overall.
Duquesne's women's tennis is off until next semester when they will open the spring season with a non-conference match with visiting Buffalo on Friday, February 7, 2002.
