Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University rowing team hosted its own invitational this past weekend on the Allegheny River, with a field that included Canisius, Robert Morris, Toledo and West Virginia on its home course. 
 
Special appearances for the Duquesne Invitational included University President Ken Gormley, J.D., who rode along in the coaches launch, and athletic staff members, the Dukes were ready to compete. 
 
Racing started at 10 a.m., with the Varsity 8 boats lined up at the bottom of Washington's Landing Island. All boats raced four, four-minute pieces, which made the finish line between the 16th Street Bridge and Veterans Bridge. At the conclusion of each piece, crews rowed back up to the bottom of the island and lined up for the next race. 
 
In the varsity eight, the first varsity four and the second varsity four, Duquesne won all four pieces. In the second varsity eight, the Dukes won two of the four pieces and in the third varsity eight, Duquesne placed second in the first two pieces and third in the last two. 
 
QUOTABLE
"Really proud with how the team executed every race," head coach Matt Carlsen said. "The reason we do four pieces is to make changes from piece to piece and every boat did just that. We are now in the championship part of the season, which is the most fun." 
 
UP NEXT
The Dukes travel to Pennsauken, N.J., for the Atlantic 10 Championship Saturday, May 16, on the Cooper River.
