Pittsburgh, Pa. – A pair of Duquesne University men's soccer players were honored with weekly accolades from the Atlantic 10 Monday, as redshirt senior goalkeeper
Diego Chavez was named A-10 Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman midfielder
Hákon Dagur Matthíasson collected A-10 Rookie of the Week plaudits.
In a
1-0 victory at Syracuse (9/5) that improved the Dukes to 3-0-1 (.850) overall during the 2025 season, Matthíasson notched his second game-winning goal of the season by tracking down an errant pass in the box and converting to help Duquesne pick up a victory over a team from a power conference for the third time in the last four years. He scored against the Orange at 61:29 and through four games ranks second for the Dukes in scoring with five points thanks to a pair of goals and an assist.
The eventual game-winning marker from Matthíasson stood up behind the play of Chavez, who registered a season-high nine saves in the victory at Syracuse. Through four games, Chavez, a transfer from NCAA Division II Colorado Mesa, has posted three shutouts, tops in the Atlantic 10 along with Gavin Krenecki of Dayton and Jeremi Abonnel of Saint Louis.
Chavez also ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in save percentage (.875) and third in goals against average (0.50) as well as sixth in the circuit in saves per game (3.50). He is at the head of a defensive unit for the Dukes that leads the A-10 in scoring margin (+1.75) while ranking 12th in NCAA Division I in shutout percentage (.750), 23rd in goals against average (0.50) and 28th in save percentage (.875).
Elsewhere among the national leaders under head coach
Chase Brooks, Duquesne ranks 11th in shots per game (17.25), 19th in goal differential (+7) and 28th in shots on goal per contest (6.50). Matthíasson, meanwhile, is one of 32 student-athletes so far this season that has scored a pair of game-winning markers, trailing only Marius Stenner (4) of Delaware and Austin Brummett of UConn and Marcus Caldeira of West Virginia, who each have three.
Led by Brooks, in his 13th season on the Bluff, Duquesne
closes a three-game road trip Tuesday, Sept. 9, with a 5:00 p.m. match in Emmitsburg, Md., against Mount St. Mary's at Horning Field at Waldron Family Stadium.
