AKRON, Ohio – Duquesne dropped a 51-7 decision at Akron on Saturday night in its second FBS matchup of the season.
The Zips (1-3) struck first midway through the opening quarter and built a 45-0 lead before the Dukes (1-3) got on the board. Sophomore quarterback
Logan Kushner capped a third-quarter drive with a one-yard touchdown run at the 5:20 mark, his second rushing score in as many weeks.
That drive was set up by a 74-yard burst from
Ness Davis, who was tackled just shy of the goal line. Davis finished with 102 yards on 11 carries for his second career 100-yard game and first as a Duke.
Shawn Solomon, Jr. added 65 yards on 11 carries, including a 34-yard run in the third quarter.
On the opening series of the game, junior linebacker
Jabari Odoemenem recorded his first career interception, picking off a pass inside the red zone. Defensively,
Antonio Epps paced Duquesne with eight tackles (seven solo) in his return from injury. He also forced a fumble that went out of bounds.
Alex Reese III and
Adrian Ramirez registered the Dukes' tackles for loss.
Akron finished with 514 yards of total offense (265 rushing, 249 passing) to Duquesne's 230 (178 rushing, 52 passing).
With the loss, Duquesne moves to 1-12 all-time against FBS opponents and 1-4 versus the Mid-American Conference. It was the Dukes' first-ever meeting with Akron and their second FBS game this season. Duquesne has faced multiple FBS opponents in five straight years.
