Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University men's soccer team opened a three-game road trip Saturday, earning a 3-0 victory over Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y., at Demske Sport Complex. The Dukes improved to 2-0-1 (.833) overall during the 2025 campaign.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Duquesne came out and continually applied the pressure in the opening half, resulting in a pair of goals. Like the last game for the Dukes, a 2-2 draw with Robert Morris (8/24) at Rooney Field, it was the same two players to find the back of the net in succession. Duquesne broke the ice at 16:35, with redshirt junior
Jaxon Ervin racing down the far sideline before finding senior forward
Dakota Jonke, who unleashed a rocket that Canisius goalkeeper Preston Harold was unable to get a hand on. The ball settled in the far right of the net to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead.
ON THE REBOUND
Owning a 10-1 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, including 6-0 on goal, the Dukes struck again with under six minutes before halftime. Sophomore midfielder
Miles Imparato charged down the far sideline and fired a shot that Harold blocked but was unable to corral. Sophomore forward
Roni Badler was in the perfect spot in the box, ripping the rebound into net at 39:24 to extend the advantage for Duquesne to 2-0.
SEALING THE DEAL
Jonke, a member of the starting lineup for the first time this season at Canisius, continued his offensive exploits in the second half, sealing the victory for Duquesne with his second goal of the contest. A scrum in the box saw Jonke get in position and fire the ball with his left foot that got past Harold and gave the Dukes a 3-0 lead. The unassisted goal marked his second of the game and third of the season. Saturday against the Golden Griffins, Jonke got off eight shots in the contest, the most since former forward
Maxi Hopfer (2020-24) finished with nine against Massachusetts (10/23/21) at Rooney Field. Ironically, the single-game record for shots also came at Canisius, as Ben Horner (2007-10) posted 11 shots against the Golden Griffins Oct. 3, 2008.
