OPENING KICKOFF
2025 Season Opener: Duquesne kicks off its 98th football season with a short trip to Acrisure Stadium to face Pitt, renewing a long-dormant rivalry. The teams last met in 1939, when Duquesne upset the No. 1-ranked Panthers, 21–13. Pitt leads the all-time series 5–2, which began in 1901 and included a four-year stretch of games from 1936 to 1939 before going dormant for 86 years.
National Recognition: Duquesne was the only NEC team to receive votes in the 2025 Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll (2 votes), after finishing 2024 receiving votes and was ranked for four weeks, peaking at No. 19.
Dukes vs. FBS: Pitt will be the 12th FBS opponent Duquesne has faced in program history. The Dukes hold a 1–10 record in those matchups, with their win coming against Ohio (28–26) in 2021. This marks Duquesne's third game against an ACC opponent, following contests at Florida State (2022) and Boston College (2024). Later this season, Duquesne will also travel to Akron (MAC) on Sept. 20, making 2025 the sixth season in which the Dukes face two FBS teams since 2018.
Back-to-Back NEC Champions: The Duquesne Dukes enter 2025 as back-to-back NEC champions, marking the second time in 17 years in the NEC the program has achieved consecutive conference titles. In 2024, Duquesne posted an 8–3 overall record and a 5–1 mark in conference play to claim a share of the regular-season crown. The Dukes return eight of their 15 all-conference honorees, which was the second-most in program history, along with 12 players who started six or more games. Duquesne is one of eight FCS programs to have won consecutive conference titles entering 2025, joining Dartmouth (2), Drake (2), Harvard (2), Richmond (2), South Dakota State (3), UT Martin (4) and Holy Cross (6).
Head Coach Jerry Schmitt: Schmitt begins his 21st season at Duquesne and 26th overall as a head coach. Under his leadership, the Dukes have claimed 10 conference championships (3 MAAC, 7 NEC) and earned three NCAA FCS playoff bids (2015, 2018, 2023). Schmitt's 128 wins at the FCS level rank third among active FCS coaches, and his 156 career victories rank fifth among active FCS coaches. Last season, he passed Dan McCann to become the longest-tenured head coach in program history and is the second-longest tenured coach in the FCS.
Program Success: Duquesne has won 18 conference titles since 1995 and posted a .500 or better record in 29 of 32 seasons at the FCS level. The Dukes lead the NEC since 2011 with 95 overall and 62 conference wins, at least 28 overall and 17 conference wins ahead of any other team, including seven NEC titles, tied with Central Connecticut State for the most in league history.
