Jimmie Williams of the Duquesne University men's basketball team was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Monday. In collecting his first career weekly honor, Williams joins senior guard
Tarence Guinyard in
earning the top weekly honor from the A-10 this season.
In a pair of home victories last week that concluded the non-conference portion of the schedule for the Dukes, Williams averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists while converting 73.9 percent (17-for-23) of his attempts from the field, including 75 percent (6-of-8) from beyond the arc.
In a
103-59 victory over Canisius (Dec. 22) to open a two-game homestand, Williams hit his first 10 shots from the field, including a 7-for-7 performance in the first half, en route to a career-high 24 points. He finished 10-of-12 from the floor in the win, including 4-of-5 from deep, while also adding six rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
In the opening six minutes of the contest against the Golden Griffins, Williams scored eight points, and he buried a pair of three-pointers late in the first half that gave Duquesne a 46-30 advantage at halftime. Williams opened the scoring in the second half with a dunk, and he had a hand in five consecutive field goals in an opening salvo after the break that saw the Dukes open up a 70-36 edge at the 14:27 mark of the second half, burying a three-pointer while dishing out four assists.
Williams would also garner game-high honors in scoring for Duquesne
in a 99-49 victory over Cleary (Dec. 27), finishing with 16 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. He knocked down seven of his 11 attempts from the field in the triumph over the Cougars, including 2-for-3 from three.
One of four players to start all 13 games for Duquesne this season, Williams enters Atlantic 10 action having produced averages of 14.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He is tied for sixth in the conference in steals per game with Brandon Jennings of VCU and Rikus Schulte of Fordham and also sits 12th in the conference in scoring and 17th in field goal percentage (.533).
The Dukes are under the guidance of second-year head coach
Dru Joyce III and own an overall record of 8-5 (.615) heading into their Atlantic 10 opener Tuesday, Dec. 30, with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Davidson at John M. Belk Arena in Davidson, N.C.
