Pittsburgh, Pa. - Duquesne University head swimming & diving coach
David Sheets announced that Matthew Brinton has joined the staff as an assistant coach.
Brinton joins the Dukes after spending the last three seasons as the head coach at Division II Frostburg State. Under his tutelage, Brinton led the women's swimming team to three consecutive Mountain East Conference titles (2022, 2023, 2024) while leading the men's team to back-to-back MEC Championships (2023, 2024). On the women's side, he coached 26 individual conference champions while tallying 12 on the men's team, including an NCAA consideration qualifier. In his final season, he featured the MEC Men's Swimmer of the Year before headlining both the men's and women's Swimmer of the Year as well as the MEC Women's Rookie of the Year in 2023. Brinton has been awarded the MEC Coach of the Year four total times, winning the prestigious honor back-to-back seasons on both the men's and women's side (2023, 2024).
"Matt has done a great job at every stop he has made on his coaching journey," Sheets said. "From the moment he met the ladies on the team I knew this was going to be a great fit. He knows our program, what is expected from our student-athletes, and he has the enthusiasm and desire to help us continue as a top-caliber program in the A10. I'm looking forward to working with Matt this upcoming season."
During his tenure in Frostburg, Maryland, he led the men's team to an overall record of 19-9, including a 14-2 mark against conference opponents. Brinton continued his excellence on the women's side as he led them to a 23-10 overall mark while posting a perfect 16-0 record in conference action. While coaching at Frostburg State, he was the NCAA Division II Coaches Connection Representative for the MEC.
"I am extremely grateful to head coach Dave Sheets for the opportunity to join the Duquesne swimming and diving program," Brinton explained. "I look forward to building upon the championship culture that has already been established and playing a role in developing our student-athletes to reach their highest potential."
Prior to his stint at Frostburg, Brinton spent a season as head coach at Division II King University. Under his leadership, he led the Tornados to 16 new school records while producing 13 top three finishers at the Conference Carolinas Championships. He recorded a pair of NCAA Division II B Cuts while having one individual conference champion. He also served as an assistant coach at Emory & Henry College in 2020-21, where he was the recruiting coordinator for both programs and had deck coaching responsibilities. As the recruiting coordinator, Brinton was able to bring in the largest recruiting class in school history.
Brinton, a native of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, is a 2017 graduate of Towson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology, anthropology, and criminal justice. With the Tigers, he helped push them to the U.S. Nationals and capture the Colonial Athletic Association Conference Championship in 2013-14. Brinton still owns top-10 times in school history in the 50-yard freestyle as well as the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. He also owns the freshman record in the 100-yard backstroke.
