PITTSBURGH -- Former Duquesne wide receiver
DJ Powell has been invited to the Pittsburgh Steelers 2024 rookie minicamp.
Powell, a first-team all-conference selection last season, led the Dukes with 713 receiving yards, 20.97 yards per catch, 59.42 yards per game, and nine receiving touchdowns. His 20.97 yards per catch average ranked sixth in the NCAA FCS and nine touchdowns were ninth in the FCS, both stats also led the Northeast Conference. Powell's nine TDs came across seven different games, including two multi-score outings - one of two NEC receivers to have multiple games with multiple touchdown catches.
A graduate transfer for the Dukes, Powell spent his four undergrad seasons at Bethune Cookman where he caught three touchdowns and hauled in over 900 receiving yards. Powell finished his collegiate career with 85 catches, 1,619 yards, and 12 touchdowns. A native of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Powell played prep ball at Blanche Ely High School.
This is the second straight season a Duquesne wide receiver has been invited to the Steelers rookie minicamp after Dwayne Menders participated in 2023.
The annual rookie minicamp will take place May 10-12 at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in Pittsburgh's South Side. A full list of participants will be announced by the Steelers later this week on
Steelers.com. NFL teams can list up to 90 players on the off-season roster before making cuts down to 53 prior to the start of the regular season.
Duquesne alum and hall of fame inductee Christian Kuntz recently agreed to a
three-year contract extension with the Steelers. Kuntz has been the team's long snapper for the past three seasons playing in a total of 51 games.
