Pittsburgh, Pa. – Senior
Shannon Small of the Duquesne University bowling team was named Northeast Conference (NEC) Bowler of the Week Wednesday. Small is the third different member of the Dukes to garner the award during the 2023-24 season, joining freshman
Maribeth Baker (11/21/23), who is also a three-time NEC Rookie of the Week, and junior
Morgan Brookover (11/15/23).
In helping Duquesne win the
Red Flash Invitational in Altoona, Pa., with an overall record of 12-1 (.923), Small was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) after claiming the individual crown. In traditional play to open the invite, Small
knocked down 1,116 pins to lead the field.
Small recorded an average of 223.20 pins per game in traditional play at the Red Flash Invite, eclipsing 200 in four of her five games. Included in that was a high of 257 in a 999-785 victory over Saint Vincent as well as a 230 in a 952-695 triumph over Mount Aloysius.
The individual championship marked the second consecutive for Small at Holiday Bowl. At the 2023 Red Flash Classic, Small knocked down a total of 1,050 pins to post a 210.00 average. Small's average of 223.20 at the Red Flash Invite places her in the top 10 for tournament averages in the Duquesne record book.
In addition to being named NEC Bowler of the Week, the third of her career at Duquesne, Small was one of four Dukes to be named an NEC Primer Performer. She was joined by senior
Brenna Gleim, graduate student
Kiearra Saldi and junior
Ranelle Ulanday.
Overall during the 2023-24 season, Small has posted an average frame score of 19.78, racking up 363 strikes in 782 attempts (46.4%) to go along with an overall fill percentage of 84 percent. She leads Duquesne in fill percentage (86.2%) in traditional play while owning 137 strikes, which ranks second on the team to Saldi (150).
Led by head coach
Jody Fetterhoff, the Dukes own an overall record of 54-25 (.684), including a mark of 11-3 (.786) in the NEC, heading into their next competition. Duquesne travels to Manchester, N.H., to compete in NEC #3 at Yankee Lanes Saturday, Feb. 17, and Sunday, Feb. 18.
