Dukes Dominate in Day One of Western PA Invite

Duquesne secured the top spot in all eight swimming events

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University swimming & diving team opened competition at the Western PA Invite, hosted by Carnegie Mellon on Friday evening, winning all eight events on day one.

The 200-yard freestyle relay opened competition on Friday, with the team of Kayla Johnson, Lexi Sundgren, Haley Scholer, and Natalia Fryckowska securing gold with a time of 1:36.86. Scholer would also take home two individual first-place finishes in the 200-yard IM (2:05.52) and 200-yard backstroke (2:01.49) before being a part of the 400-yard medley relay team that touched the wall at 3:54.11 to take gold.

Junior Orla Egan registered a pair of top finishes, posting a time of 4:50.17 in the 500-yard freestyle before clocking in at 52.16 in the 100-yard free, both which were poolrecords. Fryckowska captured gold in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.71) while being in the second position of the 400-yard medley that took first. Sophomore Sydney Severini also participated in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with the silver after touching the wall at 1:05.33.

Sundgren took part in five events on Friday, posting a second-place finish in the 100-yard free (53.48), a third-place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:10.83), before anchoring the 400-yard medley. In the 200-yard butterfly, graduate student Madeline Marks finished with the gold, registering a time of 2:06.50 while senior Reagan Linkous took silver in the 200-yard backstroke, with a time of 2:03.06.

The 400-yard medley relay concluded day one as the Dukes set a new pool record. The team of Scholer, Fryckowska, freshman Julia Sobun, and Sundgren secured first-place by touching the wall at 3:54.11.

The Duquesne University diving team also took part at the invitational, with sophomore Ashley Felitsky competing in the one-meter and compiling a score of 236.60 to secure silver. Junior Julia Doolittle and sophomore Kendall Nigh also competed off the boards, with Doolittle finishing with a score of 206.95 and Nigh ending with 198.95.

The Dukes continue action at the Western PA Invite on Saturday, Jan, 27, at 10:00 a.m. with nine events on tap. The 200-yard medley relay will kick things off, followed by the 400-yard IM and 200-yard freestyle.
