CONWAY, S.C. - The Duquesne University football team dropped a 66-7 decision to FBS opponent Coastal Carolina on Saturday night at Brooks Stadium.
The Chanticleers (2-1) came out firing early and never looked back rolling to a home victory over the Dukes (1-2), who were playing their second FBS opponent in as many weeks.
Coastal Carolina found the endzone on each of its three first quarter drives to go up 21-0 and didn't stop there. CCU scored on seven of its eight drives, with the only non-scoring drive coming on their last time with the ball in the fourth quarter turning it over on downs.
Duquesne was able to rack up 347 yards of total offense, including 183 yards on the ground, but struggled to finish drives. Freshman Edward Robinson led the ground game with an early career best 96 yards on 13 attempts. Robinson (19 yards), Taj Butts (19 yards) and JaMario Clements (17 yards) all broke off long runs in the game.
Keshawn Brown snagged the lone touchdown for the Dukes from Matt Robinson, who entered in the third quarter, on a fourth-and-six. Robinson lofted his third completion of the night to Brown for the 23-yard score inside the back corner of the endzone.
A muffed punt by CCU's Tyson Mobley recovered by DU's Dayvia Gbor set up the touchdown drive at the Coastal 27 yard-line. It is the second straight week that the Dukes recovered a fumble on a punt.
Brown finished the night with a game-high 90 yards receiving and seven catches, which were both career best marks, including the two longest plays of the game for DU for 37 and 23 yards, respectively.
Robinson went 5-for-6 for 69 yards at QB for the Dukes, while starter Darius Perrantes was 8-for-20 for 95 yards.
Duquesne made a charge to get on the board at the end of the first half with a nine-play, 47-yard drive into Chanticleers territory but a 100-yard pick six, the second of two for CCU in the game, put a stop to the momentum and added to the Coastal lead at the end of the first half (45-0).
Jayden Johnson and Gianni Rizzo paced the defense with seven tackles apiece. Johnson had one for loss and Rizzo charted half a TFL. Ayden Garnes and Ty Howard tied their career-highs with five tackles each.
Duquesne will be off for a bye next week before beginning conference play at LIU on September 30. Kickoff from Brooklyn, N.Y. is set for 12 pm.
