Hamilton's Bronze Medal Highlights Day One of A-10 Outdoor Championships

Haley Hamilton earns bronze in 3000m steeplechase; Dukes score in three events; Emily Brozeski leads heptathlon

AMHERST, Mass. – The Duquesne women's track and field team scored in three events, headlined by a bronze-medal finish by Haley Hamilton, at Day One of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships at the UMass Track & Field Complex on Saturday.
 
Hamilton battled for a hard-fought, third-place finish with a personal-best 10:39.29 in the 3000m steeplechase, her second straight season earning a bronze medal in the event.
 
HEPTATHLON
Defending gold medalist Emily Brozeski sits in first place through four events. Brozeski took first place in the 100m hurdles (14.32) and shot put (12.34m – 40'6"), while placing second in the 200m (25.80) and fourth in the high jump (1.62m – 5'3¾") for 3192 points. The two-time medalist and defending champion is ahead by 124 points with three events (long jump, javelin, and 800m) remaining tomorrow.
 
Junior Jamelah Carswell closed out strong with a third-place finish in the 200m (26.32) and is in sixth place after Day One in the heptathlon with 2740 points. Sophomore Halle Walcutt sits in eighth place with 2732 points and had her best performance of the day in the shot put, placing second (11.06m – 36'3½").
 
DAY ONE POINT SCORERS
In addition to Hamilton's bronze medal, junior Sadie Wetzel scored in the high jump tying for fifth place going over 1.63m (5'4¼"), then freshman Megan Penrod launched a 38.62m (126'8") javelin throw on her second attempt, which was good to hold for eighth place securing points for the Dukes.
 
Duquesne totaled 10.5 points on Day One and is seventh place. George Mason leads the meet with 68 points.
 
ADVANCING TO THE FINALS
Sophomore Mara Whalen ran a personal-best 2:12.16 in the third heat of the 800m race to qualify for the finals of her first A-10 Outdoor Championships.
 
NOTES
Junior Alyssa Willis just missed out on the finals in the 100m dash by four-hundredths of a second, running a 12.04. Senior Tori Kocsis set a new personal best in the 10,000m with a 37:20.76 finishing 12th. Sophomores Liv Wilson (2:14.42) and Delaney Line (2:17.71) PR'd in the 800m.
 
UP NEXT
Heptathlon action will kick off Day Two tomorrow for the Dukes beginning at 10:15 a.m. Field events start at 10:30 a.m. and the finals on the track will commence at 11:00 a.m.
