PITTSBURGH - Non-conference games at Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents West Virginia and Coastal Carolina, as well as a visit to Delaware highlight the 11-game 2023 Duquesne football schedule released today.
Â
This is the fifth time in the past six years that the Duquesne will face two FBS opponents in non-league play.
The Dukes will face Central Connecticut, Saint Francis U and Stonehill at home and travel to LIU, Sacred Heart, Wagner and Merrimack in Northeast Conference play.
The Sept. 2 opener, vs. Edinboro on Rooney Field, which will be the first meeting between the two since a 14-0 Dukes win in the 1929 season opener, rounds out the schedule that includes four home games and seven on the road.
Duquesne will make the short trip to Morgantown to face WVU on Sept. 9.
This will be the DU's first meeting with the Big XII Conference's Mountaineers in 88 years. The last being a 19-0 Duquesne win at WVU on Nov. 16, 1935. The two met eight times between 1914 and 1935, with West Virginia holding a 4-3-1 series edge.
On Sept. 16, Duquesne will travel to Conway, S.C. to face a Coastal Carolina team coming off a 9-4 season. This will be the first meeting between the Dukes and Chanticleers who were ranked in both the Associated Press and USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Top 25 at one point last season. Coastal reached as high as No. 9 in the AP poll as recently as 2020.
Â
DU opens conference play at LIU on Sept. 30, before closing out the non-conference portion of the schedule at Delaware on Oct. 7. It will be the second meeting between the Dukes and Blue Hens, with Delaware owning a 30-6 home win in 2010.
Â
Duquesne will then host CCSU (Oct. 14) and SFU (Oct. 21) on back-to-back weekends prior to taking on Sacred Heart (Oct. 28) and Wagner (Nov. 4) on the road.
Â
The Dukes' regular season home finale is on Nov. 11 vs. Stonehill, and the final regular season game is at Merrimack on Nov. 18.
