Dukes Set New Program Record for Home Wins with Victory Over Loyola Chicago

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Duquesne women's basketball team won its 14th and final home game of the season Wednesday night, defeating Loyola Chicago, 71-61, at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. The 14 home wins are a new Duquesne program record.

Duquesne improves to 18-10 (8-7 A-10) while Loyola falls to 6-22 (1-14 A-10).

Junior center Precious Johnson dropped a career-high 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting. She also grabbed 11 rebounds to notch her third double-double of the season. Junior guard Amaya Hamilton scored 16 points and dished out four assists. Sophomore guard Megan McConnell flirted with a triple-double tonight, scoring eight points, grabbing nine rebounds and recording seven assists.

Duquesne had another good shooting night, going 47.6 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point range. The Dukes had a 40-30 rebounding advantage, a 20-14 advantage in assists and a 32-5 advantage in bench points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Duquesne's offense couldn't get anything going early in the first quarter and it found itself down 10-2 with 5:03 left. The Dukes' shots finally started falling, but so did Loyola's. After one quarter, Loyola led, 19-15.

Duquesne started the second quarter much better, but Loyola's scoring pace didn't slow down. The Ramblers made 10 of their first 19 shots and led the Dukes 27-26 with 6:03 left in the first half.

The Dukes' offense stalled towards the end of the second, going scoreless for over five minutes. Luckily, Duquesne was able to slow down the Ramblers for the most part, and only went into halftime down by three.

Duquesne was able to take the lead in under three minutes once the second half started, but it wasn't able to keep it. After finding themselves back down by four, the Dukes scored a quick six points to get back in front. After three quarters, Duquesne led by two.

Johnson scored six points early in the fourth to anchor Duquesne's lead, then Hamilton complemented her with a few buckets of her own. Johnson ended up scoring 10 fourth quarter points to lead the Dukes to victory.

When it was all said and done, Duquesne wrapped up its school-record 14th home win of the season. The final score was 71-61.
