Duquesne Drops Regular Season Finale

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Duquesne women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale to Saint Joseph's on Saturday, 64-60.

Duquesne ends the regular season 18-11 (8-8 A-10) while SJU improves to 19-8 (9-7 A-10). Seedings for the A-10 Championship will be officially released by the conference on Saturday night.

Both teams traded punches for 40 minutes, as neither team got up by more than nine points. Duquesne held the lead for 55.5 percent of the game, but the Hawks were never out of it. Saint Joseph's grabbed the lead for good in the fourth quarter, and despite Duquesne's late efforts, the Dukes weren't able to climb all the way back.

Sophomore guard Tess Myers hit four three-pointers and scored 12 points today. Her five rebounds were tied for the second-most on the team. Junior center Precious Johnson also scored 12 and grabbed five rebounds.

Sophomore guard Megan McConnell led the team with 12 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Duquesne got up 7-2 right away, but the Hawks tied it up at 9-9 soon thereafter. A second three-pointer by sophomore guard Naelle Bernard put the Dukes up 12-9 after 10 minutes. Neither team shot higher than 29.4 percent in the first.

Duquesne hit a few shots in the second, including a tough layup through contact by junior forward Ayanna Townsend. At the media timeout, the Dukes held a three-point lead.

The Dukes couldn't extend their lead much further, but they still held it at halftime. After 20 minutes, Duquesne led 27-25.

After the teams traded buckets for the first few minutes of the second half, a three-pointer by Myers, her third of the game, gave Duquesne its largest lead of the game at 43-36.

SJU was able to make that lead disappear early in the fourth as it gained the advantage with 8:20 left in the game.

Once Duquesne got back within one point, the Hawks and Dukes traded buckets for what seemed like 10-straight possessions all the way until the final whistle blew. When the dust settled, the Dukes just couldn't claw all the way back into the lead, and fell 64-60.
