Duquesne Stumbles on the Road Against La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Duquesne women's basketball team fell on the road to La Salle on Sunday afternoon, dropping the game 72-56 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Duquesne falls to 15-10 (5-7 A-10) with the loss while La Salle improves to 15-11 (6-5 A-10).

It was a tight game most of the way, with neither team leading by more than nine points until late in the third quarter. In the final quarter, La Salle shot 64.3 percent from the field to lead it to victory at home. Duquesne's struggles from the free throw line continued today, as it shot 17-for-30.

Junior center Precious Johnson led Duquesne with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Junior guard Amaya Hamilton (13) and sophomore guard Tess Myers (10) were also in double digits. Sophomore guard Megan McConnell led all players with 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Five of the first seven made shots in the game were three-pointers, including two from sophomore guard Naelle Bernard, and La Salle led by one point at the first media timeout.

Duquesne couldn't get much going for the last few minutes of the first quarter, but it trailed by just two points after 10 minutes.

McConnell was cleaning up the glass early on. She had seven rebounds less than 12 minutes into the game. With 4:08 left in the first half, she grabbed her 10th rebound.

Issues from the free throw line held Duquesne back in the first half, as they were just 7-for-16 from the stripe in the first 17 minutes and 8-for-18 in the first half.

Despite the struggles from the line, Duquesne was within three points going into the second half. Bernard's seven points led the Dukes after 20 minutes.

Myers and Hamilton hit back-to-back threes early in the third quarter to tie things up at 30-30. La Salle then went on a mini-run, outscoring Duquesne 11-4 over the next few minutes. As the third quarter game clock was counting closer to zero, La Salle hit a three-pointer to give the Explorers a 12-point lead.

Unfortunately for the Dukes, La Salle caught fire early in the fourth, making its first three shots to extend its lead to 18 points. The Explorers didn't stop and they just kept lighting it up from three, propelling their lead to 20 points.

When it was all said and done, Duquesne wasn't able to get back into this one and the Dukes fell, 72-56.
