FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Darius Perrantes and DJ Powell connected on two touchdown passes in the first half and Edward Robinson ran for 120 yards, as the Duquesne University football team rolled to a 27-0, shutout victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at Campus Field, improving to 4-0 in Northeast Conference play.
The Dukes got started fast with a touchdown less than two minutes into the game. The NEC passing leader, Perrantes found three different receivers for big catches on the opening drive. Tedy Afful snagged a 21 yard, back shoulder catch on the first play of the game, Keshawn Brown moved DU down the field with a 25-yard catch, then Powell got the Dukes on the board first with a four-yard touchdown. Taj Butts added a 15-yard run on the energizing first drive.
The Perrantes to Powell connection was back at it just before the half with a 34-yard touchdown, as DU took a 20-0 lead into the break.
The two touchdowns for each today bolstered their conference leads to 16 TD passes for Perrantes and eight TD receptions for Powell. Robinson extended the drive with a tough third-down catch inside the sideline the play before the long touchdown.
Brian Bruzdewicz added 33- and 34-yard field goals to get the Dukes up 13-0 early in the second quarter. DU converted their lone fourth-down attempt on a six-yard pass to Joey Isabella moving the offense down to the SHU 19-yard line on the second field goal drive.
The dominating Dukes defense forced a three-and-out on each of the first four drives and five of the six first-half outings.
Duquesne was right back at it out of the half with a defensive 3-and-out, then marched inside the redzone before a third-down pass to the endzone was intercepted.
Robinson charted his first career 100-yard game with a game-high 120. He extended the lead to 27-0 with a 33-yard rushing score at the 4:19 mark in the third quarter. Robinson rushed four times on the six-play scoring drive that spanned 75 yards, the longest of the game.
Sacred Heart (1-8 , 1-5) was kept out of the red-zone all day and was in Duquesne territory just twice, getting as close as the 34-yard line in the second half.
