NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Duquesne University midfielder
Alana Piano (Brockport, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) and attacker
Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) were named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectfully, for the second-consecutive week announced the league office Monday afternoon.
Â
Piano was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week after she scooped up seven ground balls, caused seven turnovers and won seven draw controls to help the Dukes notch a pair of wins this past week. Piano also posted eight goals and an assist in those wins over George Mason and George Washington.
Â
Piano leads the A-10 and ranks fifth in Division I with 2.53 caused turnovers per game. She also leads the league and slots seventh nationally with 3.33 ground balls per game.
Â
Rodriguez-Shaw earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors for the second-straight week and fourth time this season after posting nine goals with two assists on the week. She established a new career-high with six goals in the win over George Mason Thursday, before finding the back of the net three more times at GW. She also added nine draw controls to her final line.
Â
In the team's 15-14 win at GW on Saturday, Rodriguez-Shaw tied the contest up at 14-14 with 40 seconds left in the game. She then went on to win the ensuing draw control, leading to
Sam King's (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) game-winning goal with just 25 seconds remaining on the clock to clinch the victory.
Â
Rodriguez-Shaw leads the team and ranks seventh in the Atlantic 10 with 39 goals this season. Her 49 points are good for eighth in the A-10.
Â
The Dukes have now earned seven total weekly honors from the A-10 this season, including a trio of defensive players of the week. In addition to Rodriguez-Shaw and Piano,
Mackenzie Leszczynski (Flourtown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week on March 22.
Â
The wins vaulted the Dukes from ninth place to sixth place in the A-10 team standings with just one game remaining. The top-six teams qualify for the Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins on April 28 in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Â
Piano, Rodriguez-Shaw and the rest of the Dukes will play their regular-season finale on the road at St. Bonaventure (1-13, 0-8 A-10) on Saturday, April 23 at 12 p.m.
