Women's Tennis Opens A-10 Play with Win Over Bonnies

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's tennis team secured a 6-1 win over St. Bonaventure to open A-10 play late Friday night at the Alpha.

The Dukes (6-7, 1-0 A-10) opened the evening up with a pair of 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead. Priyanka Mitta and Meredith Lee notched the first win at No. 2 doubles, before the tandem of Margot Pessy and Daniela Latoni cliched the point at the top position.

Duquesne earned the team victory with a trio of hard-fought wins at the Nos. 1, 2, & 3 singles positions. Pessy collected a 7-6 (10-3), 4-6, 6-3 win at the top position, while Ellen Shanahan's 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles put the Dukes one win away from clinching the match.

Ana Utrilla Benito rallied from a 4-6 loss in the opening set to win 6-4, 7-6 (10-2) in the final two sets to push the Dukes to the team victory.

"The women started strong in doubles dominating their opponents," Head Coach Vanessa Steiner said. "Ana battled through a setback in the first set and being down 1-5 in the third set to clinch the match for the team."

Victories by Natasha Novak and Lee at No. 5 and No. 6 singles wrapped up the night for Duquesne.

The Dukes are back on the court on Sunday, March 27 when they host Dayton at the Alpha for a match at 1 p.m.
