Duquesne Releases 2022 Football Schedule

Dukes to play two FBS opponents for fourth-straight year

PITTSBURGH - A pair of road contests at Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents Florida State and Hawaii, as well as a seven-game Northeast Conference (NEC) slate highlight Duquesne's 2022 football schedule released on Tuesday afternoon.

The Dukes, led by 18th-year head coach Jerry Schmitt, went 7-3 last season and closed out the year with three-straight wins to finish second in the conference standings. Duquesne became the first team from the NEC to defeat an FBS team when it knocked off Ohio, 28-26, in Athens in the second game of the season.

Duquesne is scheduled to play two games against FBS opponents for the fourth time in the past five years. The Dukes will open the season with a "Week Zero" game on Aug. 27 in Tallahassee against Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium. It will be the first-ever meeting against the Seminoles, who are led by third-year head coach Mike Norvell.

The Dukes will make the short trip across the state line to battle Youngstown State on Sept. 3 at Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins are coming off of a 3-7 campaign under third-year head coach Doug Phillips. Duquesne is 0-4 all-time against YSU, including a 34-14 setback in the last meeting in 2019.

The Dukes will travel to The Aloha State for a Sept. 17 matchup at Hawaii. The Dukes and Rainbow Warriors met for the first time in 2018, when Hawaii rallied from a 14-0 deficit to defeat Duquesne 42-21. The 2022 season marks the Rainbow Warriors' first under new head coach and former record-setting quarterback Timmy Chang.

Following a bye-week, the Dukes will enter the NEC portion of their schedule and open conference play on Oct. 1 at Bryant. Duquesne took a 39-34 lead with 31 seconds to play and stopped the Bulldogs inches from the end-zone on the game's final play to secure the win in last season's meeting.

The Dukes return to Pittsburgh to host Merrimack on Homecoming and Family Weekend Oct. 8 at Rooney Field. Duquesne toppled the Warriors 37-14 in the first-ever game between the two schools last year.

After the team's second bye-week, the Dukes will travel on Oct. 22 to take on Central Connecticut. Duquesne scored with 29 seconds to play to pull out a 31-27 come-from-behind win over the Blue Devils at Rooney Field last season.

Following their game at Central Connecticut, the team returns home to Rooney Field on Oct. 29 to welcome LIU. The Dukes and Sharks have met three times, with Duquesne winning each matchup.

The five-time NEC champion Dukes will then host defending-champion Sacred Heart on Nov. 5 at Rooney Field. The Pioneers have earned the conference's bid to the FCS Playoffs each of the past two seasons. Duquesne has won six of the past eight meetings with Sacred Heart.

The Dukes will make the trek out to Loretto to face intrastate foe Saint Francis on Nov. 12. The Dukes own a 35-7 advantage in the all-time series and have won three of the past four contests against the Red Flash.
Duquesne will close out the regular-season at home on Nov. 19 against Wagner. The Dukes have won seven-straight games against the Seahawks, including a 44-0 rout in the 2021 season-finale.

Season ticket information, game times and TV/streaming details will be released at a later date when the complete schedule is released.

Duquesne has finished first or second in the conference eight times since joining the NEC prior to the 2008 season.

The Dukes have posted more overall wins (76) and conference victories (48) than any other NEC team since the beginning of the 2011 season.

Duquesne is 2-8 all-time versus current ACC members, with its last meeting being a 53-20 loss to Clemson in 1950. The week prior to that loss, the Dukes defeated Louisville 27-20. Duquesne discontinued football following the 1950 season and returned on the club level prior to the 1969 season.
