McConnell's Triple-Double Leads Duquesne Over Delaware on the Road

She tied career highs with 15 rebounds and 10 assists

NEWARK, Del. – Sophomore guard Megan McConnell recorded her second triple-double of the season as the Duquesne women's basketball team took down the Delaware Blue Hens on Sunday afternoon, winning 66-55 on the road.

McConnell scored 12 points, grabbed 15 rebounds for the second-straight game and dished out 10 assists. She also had four steals.

Junior center Precious Johnson scored 17 points to lead Duquesne offensively. Johnson was 9-for-19 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds.

Sophomore guard Tess Myers had it going from beyond the arc, shooting 4-for-6 from three. She ended the game with 15 points.

Sophomore guard Naelle Bernard also had a nice game, scoring 14 points, getting four rebounds and giving out three assists.

As a team, Duquesne shot well from the field, going 23-for-52 (44.2 percent). The Dukes were 10-for-24 (41.7 percent) from three.

The Dukes had 18 assists compared to Delaware's 11 and they outscored the Blue Hens 26-22 in the paint.

The game began in an unorthodox way, with Duquesne shooting a free throw prior to tip-off due to an administrative technical foul on Delaware. Going into the game, the Dukes were up 1-0.

On Duquesne's first possession, Johnson made a three-pointer to give the Dukes a very early 4-0 lead on the Blue Hens.

After the quick start, Duquesne was held scoreless until 2:45 in the first quarter when McConnell found Johnson down low for the easy layup. Fortunately for Duquesne, its defense was locking down Delaware and still led 8-5 after the score.

Defense prevailed for both sides in the first, as Delaware led 9-8 after one quarter.

After a low-scoring first quarter, Duquesne's offense exploded out of the gate in the second. Myers got the party started with three-pointers on back-to-back possessions, then junior guard Amaya Hamilton followed that up with a three of her own.

On the next possession, Hamilton found Johnson for an easy layup. In just two and a half minutes, Duquesne more than doubled its point total from the first 10 minutes.

The pace of the scoring slowed down for a few minutes, then Duquesne found its rhythm once again. Bernard made a three-pointer, Johnson made a layup then McConnell went end-to-end for a three-point play after drawing a foul.

Johnson scored again to give the Dukes a six-point advantage, but that was cut in half after Delaware made a three-pointer at the buzzer. Going into half, Duquesne led 31-28.

Early on into the third quarter, a McConnell layup and another Myers three-pointer extended Duquesne's lead to eight points.

Johnson made her seventh shot to give the Dukes a nine-point lead, then McConnell found Bernard for another Duquesne three-pointer to extend the lead to 12 points.

After a quick run by Delaware, the Dukes responded quickly with back-to-back three-pointers by Myers and Bernard to get their lead back up to 13.

Heading into the final frame, Duquesne was up 54-41.

Delaware got physical at that point, and put Duquesne into the bonus with 8:23 left in the game.

On the following possession, McConnell found Bernard for another three-pointer to give Duquesne's point guard her 10th assist of the game – bringing her stat line to 10 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists – giving her her second triple-double of the year.

But Delaware was still fighting and went on an 8-0 run, led by two three-pointers, to bring Duquesne's lead down to six points.

Two free throws by Myers gave Duquesne a nine-point lead with 3:50 remaining in the game, and the Dukes were good enough from the line to close this one out.

When the time on the clock ran out, Duquesne came out on top, winning 66-55.
