Dan Burt Ties All-Time Wins Record with Victory Against Kent State

Tess Myers and Amaya Hamilton each put up career high point totals in the win

PITTSBURGH – Sophomore guard Tess Myers and junior guard Amaya Hamilton led Duquesne over Kent State on Wednesday night, winning 73-67, as each of them set career highs with 23 and 22 points, respectively.

Duquesne improves to 7-2 on the year while Kent State falls to 5-3.

Tonight's win also marked the 176th of head coach Dan Burt's tenure on the Bluff, which ties the all-time wins record for women's basketball at Duquesne.

Myers tied career highs with 23 points and six three-pointers made to lead Duquesne's offense. She was 6-for-8 from deep.

Hamilton was a thorn in Kent State's side all night, shooting 10-for-17 from the field, grabbing 12 rebounds and notching two steals.

Sophomore guard Megan McConnell had another well-rounded night, as she scored 11 points, secured 12 rebounds and dished out eight assists. She now has five double-doubles this season.

Tonight was by far Duquesne's best shooting night from three-point range this season, as the Dukes were 9-for-16 from beyond the arc.

Neither team got up by more than 10 at any point and there were eight lead changes over the 40 minutes. Both sides played physical and fast, but Duquesne dominated in the paint, outscoring the Golden Flashes 34-18 down low.

Duquesne's offense got off to a blistering hot start to this game, making six of its first nine shots. Myers made two early three-pointers and all five starters for the Dukes were on the board before the first media timeout.

A free throw by Duquesne after a technical foul by Kent State's coach put the Dukes up 21-16 with a little over a minute left in the first quarter. After 10 minutes, Duquesne was up by three points.

Myers started off the second quarter with another three-pointer and sophomore guard Naelle Bernard matched with one of her own. A layup by junior center Precious Johnson put the Dukes up 29-23 with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Kent State matched Duquesne with every three-pointer, as both teams had seven of them by the midpoint of the second quarter.

With their eighth three-pointer of the first half, the Golden Flashes finally took the lead at 34-33. Their ninth came on the following possession, and the two teams were shooting a combined 65.2 percent at that point in the half as the three-pointers kept coming.

Two layups by McConnell kept Duquesne within four points, but Kent State wouldn't slow down offensively. Another three-pointer by the Golden Flashes gave them 10 in the first half and they led by five at halftime.

In the second half, Duquesne was able to tie the game at 46 within a couple minutes as Hamilton and Myers teamed up for a quick seven points.

Myers continued to put on a show from beyond the arc as she hit her fifth three-pointer of the night to put Duquesne up by four points.

Kent State tied it up with just over three minutes left in the third quarter, then McConnell and Johnson put Duquesne back up by four points with two free throws each.

Just before the end of the third, Kent State made its 13th three-pointer of the night to tie the game at 58 going into the final frame.

The Dukes began the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run thanks to two more Hamilton buckets, getting her up 20 points on the night, which is a career high.

Another clutch make by Hamilton got Duquesne's lead up to four again, then Myers nailed a massive three-pointer to give Duquesne a seven-point lead with 1:30 remaining.

Myers closed the game out by knocking down four free throws late. She scored Duquesne's final six points as the Dukes won this one, 73-67.
