ORLANDO, Fla. - Duquesne posted a 4-0 victory over Dayton in the first round of the 2021 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship on Wednesday afternoon at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The Dukes, who earned the eighth seed for the 20210 A-10 Championship, improved to 7-5 on the season with the victory and move on to face top-seeded VCU in the quarterfinal round on Thursday afternoon.
The duo of
Margot Pessy and
Meredith Lee posted a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles to put the Dukes ahead. After the Flyers collected a 6-2 triumph at the third flight, the tandem of
Ellen Shanahan and
Daniela Latoni recorded a 7-5 win at the No. 2 position, sealing the doubles point for Duquesne.
In singles play, Lee pushed the Dukes' advantage to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 flight followed by Pessy besting her opponent by a score of 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to give Duquesne a 3-0 lead.
Latoni would clinch the match for the Dukes with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, claiming the 4-0 postseason victory for Duquesne.
The Dukes have now won four in a row over Dayton and 14 of the last 15 meetings with the Flyers.

The Dukes take on top-seeded VCU tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The Rams enter Thursday's matchup with an 11-9 overall record including a 4-0 ledger against teams from the A-10.
