PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne men's tennis team defeated local foe Carnegie-Mellon 7-2 on Saturday afternoon. The teams played the NCAA Division III format, playing ad, an eight-game pro set for doubles, and a nine-point match. The Dukes evened their record at 5-5 on the year in their last match before traveling to Orlando, Fla. for the Atlantic 10 Championship later this month.
The Dukes started off strong in doubles, as the senior duo of
Alex Mascioli and
Joey Matthews won 8-4 at the No. 2 doubles flight.
Jin Dassanayake and
Kaipo Marshall also took a 8-6 victory at the No. 3 doubles flight, as the Dukes took a 2-1 lead going into singles.
Bode Vance was first off the court in singles, giving Duquesne a 6-1, 6-1 win at the fourth singles flight.
Alex Mascioli won 6-3, 6-3 at first singles and
Kaipo Marshall clinched the team victory for the Dukes with a 7-5, 6-4 win at third singles.
Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal won 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles flight, and
Tamirlan Teberikov pulled out a tough 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
Joey Matthews, making his singles debut on the year, lost 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
"CMU is a tough team that always gives us a good battle," said Duquesne Director of Tennis
Vanessa Steiner. "We came out strong and grinded through the matches to take a quality victory. We are looking forward to our conference tournament, as we hope to do some damage and take revenge for some losses earlier in the season."
