Dukes Sign Jackie Johnson and Amir Spears

Pair of freshmen are latest members of the 2021-22 recruiting class

PITTSBURGH – Duquesne University head men's basketball coach Keith Dambrot announced today that guards Jackie Johnson (Wichita, Kan./Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy) and Amir "Primo" Spears (Hartford, Conn./Mt. Zion (Md.) Prep) have signed National Letters of Intent, bringing the 2021-22 recruiting class to six.

Both freshman newcomers are coming off highly-successful prep school seasons.

The 6-0 Johnson averaged over 27 points, four 3-pointers and six assists per game in helping Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, Va.) to a 31-1 record in 2020-21. The Wichita, Kan. native shot over 50 percent from the field and 3-point arc and 90 percent from the foul line in his senior season at Hargrave.

A prolific scorer who opened eyes when he scored 54 points in an early-season scrimmage against Oak Hill Academy, Johnson totaled 1,347 points in three high school seasons in Wichita prior to enrolling at Hargrave.

Johnson is listed as a 3-star recruit, and No. 34 point guard prospect in the class of 2021, by Rivals.com.

"Jackie is both an explosive scorer and capable facilitator," said Dambrot. "He's a proven winner with the potential to make an immediate impact for us."

Spears, who stands six-two, played at Windsor (Conn.) High School before spending a prep year as a combo guard at Mt. Zion Prep in Lanham, Md. where he averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists against an abbreviated national schedule in 2020-21.

The 185-pounder, was a two-sport star at Windsor where he was a New Haven Register second team all-state defensive back in his one season on the gridiron. He also saw action at receiver as a two-way player.

Spears also earned all-state and All-Hartford Courant honors on the hardwood.

"Primo is a hard-nosed, tough East Coast guard that is a super all-around player," said Dambrot. "He is a high-level athlete who also has the ability to create for others."

"We knew we had to make additions to the backcourt, especially at the point guard position and we're excited about what both Jackie and Primo will bring," continued Dambrot. "Ideally, we'd like to play two ballhandling, scoring, facilitating guards at all times and this helps move us in that direction."

Johnson and Spears join Leon Ayers III, Andy Barba, Rodney Gunn Jr. and Tre Williams in the 2021-22 recruiting class.
