Men's Tennis Defeats Mercyhurst

PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne University Men's Tennis team emerged victorious on sunday afternoon taking a 6-1 victory against visiting Mercyhurst at Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh. 

The Dukes improved to 2-0 on the season, with Tamirlan Teberikov clinching the match with a 1-6, 6-2, 5-2 (ret) win at the fourth singles flight.

Duquesne started strong by taking the doubles point, sweeping all three spots. Jin Dassanayake and Bode Vance were able take the first win on the day with a 6-3 win, after starting down 2-0 at the third flight.  Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal and Teberikov followed with a hard fought 6-4 victory in the first flight.  While Alex Mascioli and Kaipo Marshall teamed up for the first time, winning 6-2 at the second flight.

"The entire team was happy to back on court and competing after a long layoff from our last competition" said Duquesne Director of Tennis Vanessa Steiner. "Our doubles teams were able to fight off some strong competition by controlling the net and dominating with our serves." 

Mascioli dropped a hard fought first set 6-4, before taking the next two sets 6-3, 6-2. Marshall was able to score a 7-5, 6-3 victory at three singles. Dassanayake was able to recover from a 2-6, 4-5 deficit at the fifth singles flight to take the second set 7-5, before finishing the third set 6-2.

Arnas Sabonis made his debut on the year by taking a 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at the sixth singles flight, completing the 6-1 victory for the Dukes.
