PREVIEW: @DuqMSoccer vs. St. Bonaventure

Dukes and Bonnies meet for second time on Saturday afternoon on Rooney Field

Duquesne (2-2, 2-1), coming off a golden goal 1-0 win over Saint Louis last Saturday, completes the home portion of the abbreviated spring schedule when it hosts St. Bonaventure (3-2-1, 0-2-1) at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 27 on Rooney Field (ESPN3). Please note late change to ESPN3.

DU, which defeated the Bonnies in their A-10 opener, 1-0 in Olean, N.Y. on Mar. 13, are looking to open conference play 3-1 for the second consecutive season.

The Bonnies game completes a three-game homestand for the Dukes which opened with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Dayton on Mar. 17.

This will be the final regular season home game for seniors Ryan Landry and Jack Shearer who will be recognized pre-match.

THE SPRING SEASON
  • The Dukes are in the midst of a six-game Atlantic 10 schedule.
  • DU will face St. Bonaventure (W, 1-0 on Mar. 13), Dayton (L, 2-4 on Mar. 17) and Saint Louis (W, 1-0 2OT on Mar. 20) twice as part of the West Division of the A-10. Davidson, George Washington, George Mason and VCU comprise the Central and Fordham, La Salle, UMass, Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's will compete in the North.
  • The three divisional champions, plus one at-large team will compete for the Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be played on the campus of the highest seed on April 15 & 17.
  • Saint Louis was picked to finish first in the A-10, with Dayton tabbed tied for second. Duquesne 10th in the poll of league coaches.

THE SERIES VS. ST. BONAVENTURE
  • Duquesne leads the overall series 15-8-4, including a 9-3-1 advantage on Rooney Field.
  • DU won the last meeting in Pittsburgh by a 4-0 score on Oct. 5, 2019.

FIRST MEETING THIS YEAR
  • Duquesne got a goal from the top of the box from Maxi Hopfer in the 63rd minute to defeat the Bonnies, 1-0, in Olean, N.Y. on Mar. 13.
  • DU, which played with a man advantage from the 35th minute on, took advantage of a strong win at its back to hand SBU its first defeat.
  • Hopfer, who was making his first start, had a match-high five shots.
  • DU, which was outshot 5-3 while going against the wind in the first half, turned it around to outshoot the Bonnies 6-2 over the second 45 minutes. Both of SBU's shots came in the final five minutes
  • It was Duquesne's first shutout sine a 1-0 win over GW on Oct. 12, 2019 and first road win since a 2-1 victory at Saint Joseph's on Sept. 21, 2019.
  • It was DU's first win at SBU since Oct. 12, 2014 (a span of two games).

LAST GAME
  • Duquesne posted its first victory in the 13-game series with Saint Louis when Maxi Hopfer, off a pass from Nate Dragisich, found the back of the net in the 107th minute.
  • SLU, which was among those receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25, had shut DU out in each of the previous five matches.
  • DU outshot SLU 23-20, including 7-0 in the two overtime periods.
  • Domenic Nascimben finished with a career-high seven saves for the Dukes.
  • Hopfer led the Dukes with six shots.

QUICK HITS
  • Duquesne is in its eighth season under head coach Chase Brooks. Brooks has led the Dukes to three Atlantic 10 Conference tournament appearances (2013, 2015 & 2016).
  • The Dukes return three field players who started 10 or more games for last season's 8-8-1 team: senior F Jack Shearer (17/16), junior, D Kendall Newman (12/10) and sophomore M/F /Nate Dragisich (17/16) - a member of the 2019 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.
  • In addition, grad student D/M Ryan Landry, who has played in 49 games with 43 starts, but missed last year due to injury and junior D Eric Zech, who started 16 games as a freshman, but was limited to five games last year due to injury, are also back.
  • In all, DU returns just seven players from last year's roster and nine players with DU experience including Landry and Zech.
  • Second-year transfer Shearer led all returnees in career games with 52 (35 at St. John's) and career starts with 42 (26 at SJU) entering the season. Landry (45 games) and Newman (27 games) were the only other returnees who entered the season having played in more than 21 games.
  • Shearer leads all returnees with eight career goals (team-high five at Duquesne last season). Nate Dragisich (2 goals), Ryan Landry (2 goals) and Eric Zech (1 goal) are the only other returnees who entered the season with a goal in a DU uniform.
  • The Dukes have 19 first-year players including 13 freshmen (one redshirt) and six transfers in junior F Ade Akinjogbin (Wofford), sophomore M Rodrigo Albayeros (Florida Atlantic), sophomore D Jacob Benintendi (Xavier), junior D Jaime Borjas (Graceland U.), junior M Logan Muck (Evansville) and sophomore D Torge Witteborg (Ottawa University-Arizona).
  • Junior Domenic Nascimben is in his first season as the starting goalkeeper. Nascimben, a native of Sydney, Australia, saw action in one game last season. He entered the season having played in six career games (425 career minutes) with four starts. He is coming off a career high seven saves in DU's 1-0 2OT win over Saint Louis last Saturday.
  • Duquesne has produced the ninth-most Men's Soccer Academic All-Americas over the past 20 years.
  • DU has been recognized by the United Soccer Coaches for its outstanding academic performance with a Team Academic Award (minimum 3.0 team GPA) 18 times in the past 21 years. No other Atlantic 10 men's soccer program has been recognized more than Duquesne since the award was instituted in 1996.
  • Duquesne produced at least one Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team member in six of the past seven years.

THIS YEAR
  • Freshman Maxi Hopfer and sophomore Nate Dragisich lead DU with four points each.
  • Hopfer (2), Dragisich (1) and Logan Muck (1) are DU's three goal scorers this year.
  • Hopfer and Dragisich lead the Dukes with 16 and 10 shots respectively. Hopfer has a team-high six shots on goal.
  • Hopfer, the Mar. 22 A-10 Rookie of the Week, has a pair of game-winning goals.
  • Domenic Nascimben has a pair of shutouts in DU's past three games (1-0 at St. Bonaventure and 1-0 in 2OT over Saint Louis).

ROONEY FIELD SPRING SPORT ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
  • Due to social distancing requirements and limited seating available at Rooney Field, attendance for home men's and women's soccer matches as well as lacrosse games played this spring is limited to family and friends of participating Duquesne student-athletes.
  • In order to ensure the safety of student-athletes and the campus community as a whole, the only fans who will be admitted are those who are listed by DU student-athletes on a monitored, pre-approved pass list.
  • Masks must be worn at all times while on campus.
  • Walk-up fans will not be permitted.
  • Fans will not be permitted to stand along fencing under the Mellon Hall overhang or on Academic Walk.
  • Tailgating is prohibited.
  • Rooney Field will open to fans 30 minutes prior to the start of the event.
  • There will be no field access prior to or following the game.
  • Concessions will not be available. Those in attendance are permitted to bring unopened non-alcoholic beverages and snacks. No coolers or large bags will be permitted.
  • Parking - Parking for those on pass lists will be available in the Forbes Avenue Parking Garage. Please take the elevator to the 8th Floor and use the walkway between the Duquesne Student Union and College Hall to walk to Rooney Field.
