PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday afternoon hosting Saint Francis U at 1 p.m. at Towers Pool. The meet between the Dukes and Red Flash will stream live on ESPN+.
Duquesne is set to honor its four seniors prior to Saturday's contest:
Emma Brinton (Landenberg, Pa. / Avon Grove),
Cateri Christinis (Charleroi, Pa. / Oakland Catholic),
Clare Flanagan (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) and
Peyton Joiner (Northford, Conn. North Branford). These four women have made a profound impact on the Duquesne swimming and diving program over the past four seasons. This group of student-athletes has helped the Dukes achieve the three of the top finishes at the Atlantic 10 Championship, including winning the team's first two conference titles in program history. In addition to their many accomplishments in the pool, these four ladies have excelled in the classroom as well, recording an average cumulative grade point average of 3.83.
One of the most decorated swimmers in school history, Brinton has won 10 medals at three A-10 Championship meets, including seven gold medal performances. Last season, she recorded an Olympic Trial cut time in the 200 long course meters individual medley at the Toyota U.S. Open Championship in Atlanta.
In 2019, she shattered her own school, A-10 Championship and pool record time in the 400 IM at the A-10 Championship, helping the Dukes to their second-straight conference title.
As a freshman, Brinton become the first Duquesne swimmer to garner Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer honors after winning three medals in her A-10 Championship debut and leading the Dukes to their first A-10 crown. Additionally, she is a two-time A-10 Academic All-Conference selection and a two-time CSCAA Academic All-American.
Christinis has notched points for Duquesne in the 500 free at each of the last two A-10 championship meets, including an 11th place finish in the event last season. She finished 12th in the 1,650-yard freestyle at last season's A-10 championship.
Christinis also helped the Dukes to back-to-back A-10 titles in 2018 and '19. In addition, Cat is a member of the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Flanagan earned bronze in the 200 back at last season's A-10 Championship, scoring for the Dukes in that event for the second-straight season. She also placed eighth in the 100-yard backstroke and 20th in the 200-yard IM at the 2020 A-10 Championship. In 2019, Flanagan finished fifth in the 200-yard backstroke and 16th in the 100-yard backstroke at the 2019 A-10 Championship. She is also a 2020 A-10 Academic All-Conference selection.
Peyton is in her fourth season with the Dukes divers after Duquesne reinstated its diving program prior to the 2017-18 campaign.
As the lone senior from the Dukes' first recruiting class since the reinstatement of the program, she is coming off a career-best performance on the 3-meter boards earlier this season at Pitt with a score of 217.05. Peyton helped the Dukes to their first two A-10 Championships in 2018 and '19 and is a member of the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Duquesne is in action for the second time this season following a home contest against Buffalo on Jan. 29, with the Bulls earning a175-68 victory. Freshman
Laura Goettler (Butler, Pa. / Butler) registered a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke for Duquesne with a time of 1:05.61. She recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 50-yard breaststroke (30.64) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.79), as well.
Audrey Steen (San Pedro, Calif. / San Pedro) placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (59.57) while the Dukes' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Steen,
Leah Reisker (Gainesville, Fla. / F.W. Buchholz),
Mara Voytek (Valley View, Ohio / Cuyahoga Heights) and
Hanna Everhart (Bloomsburg, Pa. / Bloomsburg Area) finished second in the event with a mark of 1:38.62.
This will be the Red Flash's first meet of the season. SFU posted a fourth-place finish at last season's Northeast Conference (NEC) Swimming & Diving Championship. The Dukes earned a 191-94 over the Red Flash in the teams' last meeting in January 2020 at Towers Pool. Duquesne has won six straight duals over SFU.
