PITTSBURGH - Duquesne will face a pair of 20-win teams, including 2019-20 Big Ten regular tri-champion Maryland, as part of the Maryland Showcase scheduled for Nov. 16-25
(complete schedule below).
The pairings for the four-team, multi-venue event were released by the
Gazelle Group earlier today.
The Dukes, who finished 21-9 last season, will play three games in a seven-day span beginning with California Baptist (21-10) at home on Nov. 16. DU will also host San Jose State (7-24) on Nov. 18, before traveling to College Park to face Maryland (24-7) - which finished the 2020 season ranked No. 12 in the Associated Press Top 25 - on Nov. 22.
It will be Duquesne's first meeting with Cal Baptist, which is coming off second place Western Athletic Conference finish. The Lancers, led by WAC Player of the Year, junior guard Milan Acquaah (18.1 ppg., 4.9 rpg., 5.8 apg.), have won 37 games over the past two seasons.
DU, which leads the series with San Jose State 2-1, will be facing the Spartans for the first time since Dec. 22, 1980. SJSU is led by 6-6 Seneca Knight, who averaged 17.1 ppg. in earning third team All-Mountain West honors as a sophomore last season.
Maryland, which tied Michigan State and Wisconsin for the Big Ten title, leads the all-time series with Duquesne 8-0. UM was ranked among the top 11 in the nation for six of the eight previous meetings. This will be the first game between the two since Nov. 30, 2002.
The Terps, who went 16-1 at home last year, have appeared in the NCAA Tournament in four of the past five seasons the tournament has been played.
Duquesne is set to return all five starters from last year's team, which was the first since 2009 - and third in 48 seasons - to win 20 games. The Dukes have posted 19 or more wins in back-to-back years for the first time since 1971 & 1972 (DU went 19-13 in 2019).
Ticket information for the 2020-21 season will be available at a later date.
