KINGSTON, RI - Fatts Russell scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to help Rhode Island erase a 10-point deficit in posting a 77-55 win over Duquesne (15-3, 5-1) at Ryan Center.
Marcus Weathers scored 20 points to lead Duquesne, which saw its win streak snapped at five. The win was the fifth in a row for the Rams who moved to 13-5 overall, 5-1 in the Atlantic 10 and 9-1 at home.
Duquesne, which led by eight at the half, took a 40-30 lead on a Weathers jumper only to be outscored 47-15 the rest of the way.
DU's 55 points were a season low.
The Dukes went 4-of-24 in the second half, including zero field goals over the final 8:51, in scoring a
Keith Dambrot Era low 17 points.
There were five ties and five lead changes before
Maceo Austin gave the Dukes a one-point lead on a pair free throws with just under seven minutes left in the first half. DU maintained the lead, extending it to 38-30 on a
Baylee Steele 3-pointer with 49 seconds left.
Duquesne took its first double-digit lead at 40-30 on a Weathers jumper, before Russell started a 16-1 Rams run with back-to-back buckets.
A Russell 3-pointer made it 46-41 as the Dukes missed seven of their first eight shots of the half.
Sincere Carry ended a 6:16 scoring drought with a layup that made it 46-43 with just under 13 minutes remaining and
Ashton Miller tied it at 46-46 on a 3-pointer with 12:21 left.
Rhode Island went up 53-46 on a Jacob Toppin 3-pointer and took a nine-point lead on a Russell layup.
The Dukes cut it to six on a pair of Weathers free throws before being outscored 16-5 the rest of the way.
Jeff Dowtin, who finished with 17 points, hit three 3-pointers over the last 7:31 to seal it.
DU, which shot 16.7 percent in the second half, finished at 32.7 percent. URI shot 59.4 percent in the second half and 49.2 percent for the game.
URI, which finished with six turnovers, turned 17 Duquesne miscues into 22 points.
The Dukes continue their two-game road trip at UMass on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
NOTES
- DU entered the game as one of five Division I schools without a road loss.
- This is just the third time DU has started A-10 play at 5-1 or better (8-0 in 2010-11 and 5-1 last year).
- It was the fourth 20-point game for Weathers who fouled out with 5:14 left. Weathers was the only Duke in double figures.
- Maceo Austin finished with a career-high 10 rebounds. The total was one more than his career high set on Nov. 21 vs. Indiana State at the Junkanoo Jam.
- Duquesne's 17 second-half points were five fewer that the previous Dambrot Era low which occurred five times, the last of which was in the first half at St. Bonaventure last year.
- DU's 55 points were a season low. The previous low was 58 in a 58-36 win over Lipscomb and a 58-56 overtime win over Fordham in the Dukes' previous game.
- Duquesne's largest lead was 10 at 40-30 with 18:33 left ... Rhode Island's largest lead was the 22-point final margin ... there were six ties and six lead changes before URI took the lead for good on a Fatts Russell fast break layup with 11:48 left ... Duquesne led for 18:32 ... Rhode Island led for 17:32 ... the game was tied for 3:56.
