AMHERST, MASS. - Tre Mitchell scored a game-high 25 points to lead Massachusetts (8-12, 2-5) to a 73-64 win over cold-shooting Duquesne in Amherst, Mass.
The loss was the second in a row for the Dukes who shot 36.7 percent in dropping to 15-4 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. DU hasn't won at UMass's Mullins Center since 2011 (a span of five games).
Sincere Carry hit a career high four 3-pointers in leading the Dukes with 20 points. The sophomore guard added seven rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals.
Marcus Weathers was the only other DU player in double figures with 13 points.
DU, which finished with one more field goal than UMass, was outscored 27-13 from the foul line. The Dukes, who entered the game shooting 75.6 percent from the stripe, finished 13-of-25.
Duquesne, which held UMass to 35 percent from the field, was outrebounded 52-34. The Minutemen turned 18 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points.
There were eight ties and six lead changes in a first half that ended with the Minutemen up 32-30. Neither team led by more than five in the opening 20 minutes.
The Minutemen took their largest lead at 42-35 on a Preston Santos putback with just under 14 minutes left.
UMass upped the lead to eight, before Duquesne cut it to 49-46 on a
Marcus Weathers basket. Weathers, who was fouled on the play, missed the free throw.
The Weathers miss was followed by a 6-0 UMass run that made it 56-46 with 5:44 left.
Massachusetts pushed the lead to 67-53 before the Dukes, behind 3-pointers from Carry and
Lamar Norman Jr. made it a five-point game with 42 seconds left.
From that point on, the Minutemen went 4-of-4 from the foul line to put the game away.
Duquesne returns home to face No. 7 (AP) Dayton on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at PPG Paints Arena. The game, set for a 7:00 p.m. tip, will be televised nationally by CBSSN.
NOTES
- The defeat was Duquesne's fifth in a row at Mullins Center. DU's last win at UMass came on Feb. 16, 2011 (81-63).
- Sincere Carry's four 3-pointers eclipsed his previous career high of three accomplished four times (vs. Lamar on Nov. 12 last). It was his fourth career 20-point game - and second this season.
- Duquesne's largest lead was three, the last of which came at 28-25 with 1:44 left in the first half ... UMass's largest lead was 14 at 67-53 with 1:23 left ... there were nine ties and six lead changes before UMass took the lead for good on a Preston Santos layup with :29 left in the first half ... Duquesne led for 8:17 ... UMass led for 26:01 ... the game was tied for 5:15.
