PITTSBURGH – Amanda Kalin posted the fourth triple-double in Duquesne women's basketball history, as the Dukes (11-5, 1-2 A-10) used a program-record third quarter scoring surge to down the La Salle Explorers (6-10, 0-2 A-10) in dominating fashion, 82-56, on Saturday afternoon at La Roche University. The win was the first for Duquesne in 2020 and conference play, snapping a three-game losing skid.
Kalin's triple-double consisted of 15 points (6-9 FG), 12 rebounds and 10 assists, while also posting three blocks and a steal against the Explorers. The Gibsonia native's 12 rebounds and 10 assists were both career-highs. She becomes just the fourth Duke to register double-figures in three major categories, joining good company in April Robinson (17 pts. 10 reb. 11 ast. - 1/3/16 vs. Dayton), Orsi Szecsi (16 pts. 12 reb. 10 ast - 11/24/13 at Morehead State) and Korie Hlede (29 pts. 11 reb. 11 ast – 12/8/94 vs. Cleveland State).
A total of four Dukes reached double-figures in scoring, as Precious Johnson connected on a career-best 12 points (6-7 FG). Joining Kalin and Johnson were Libby Bazelak (11 pts.) and Nina Aho (10 pts.). Leading the charge off the glass were Laia Solé (8), Bazelak (5), Johnson (5), Paige Cannon (5) and Kiersten Elliott (5).
First Quarter
- With the score 9-7 in favor of Duquesne with 5:05 left in the period, the Dukes quickly built an eight-point advantage of 18-10 following a 9-3 sprint.
- La Salle cut the deficit to six, as Duquesne entered the second frame with a 22-16 advantage.
- Aho posted eight of her 10 points in the first quarter, while Kalin registered five points four rebounds and four assists during the first 10 minutes of action.
- Duquesne shot 9-of-18 from the field (3-5 3PT) while holding La Salle to 33.3 (6-18) percent on its attempts.
Second Quarter
- The Explorers quickly trimmed the deficit to three points at 22-19, but the Dukes and Explorers traded buckets for the most of the quarter.
- With Duquesne leading 34-29 with 3:30 to go until halftime, the Dukes scored four consecutive points to take a 38-29 advantage into the locker room.
- Duquesne's defense held La Salle to shoot just 28.6 percent (6-15), including just 11.1 percent from long distance in the second quarter (1-9)
- Well on her way to the triple double, Kalin registered 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists by halftime.
Third Quarter
- Duquesne took control in the third quarter, posting a school-record 32 points in the period.
- The Dukes shot at a 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) clip, draining 5-of-7 attempts from long distance.
- With the Dukes leading 50-33, Duquesne posted 18 consecutive points, grabbing a 65-33 lead. The Dukes entered the final period up 30 points at 70-40.
- All nine players that appeared in the quarter registered at least two points, while five different players sunk a triple.
- Nine of Duquesne's 11 field goals came off an assist.
Fourth Quarter
- With the game in-hand, La Salle closed the game on a 7-2 run for the final score of 82-56.
- Six of Johnson's 12 points came in the final quarter.
- Kalin distributed four assists in the quarter to complete the triple-double.
NOTES:
- The Dukes' 32 points in the third quarter was a program-best. The previous third-quarter best was 31 points, which was set the last time Duquesne hosted La Salle on Jan. 17, 2018.
- Duquesne shot well from the stripe, draining 10-of-14 attempts.
- The Dukes outscored the Explorers 28-4 on fast breaks.
- Duquesne led for 39:41 of the 40 minute contest (99.2%).
- Duquesne's 23 assists are a season-high.
- Duquesne's 42 defensive rebounds are a season-best.
- Duquesne's eight blocks are a season-high.
- The Dukes have registered at least 72 points in 14 of 16 games this season.
- La Salle's field goal percentage of 27.4 was the second lowest of 2019-20.
