DAYTON, Ohio – The Duquesne women's basketball team found success offensively late in the fourth quarter, but it was too late to overcome a sizeable deficit, falling to Dayton, 54-41, on Wednesday night at UD Arena. The Dukes (11-6, 1-3 A10) outscored the Flyers (11-7, 4-0 A10) 17-11 in the fourth quarter and closed the contest on a 13-2 sprint.
Freshman Precious Johnson put together her best overall game to date, producing a career-best 16 points (6-12 FG, 4-5 FT), while grabbing six rebounds and connecting on three powerful blocks in just 20 minutes of action. The 16-point output marked the second consecutive game where Johnson established a new career-high in scoring, as she supplied 12 points against La Salle on Jan. 11.
Libby Bazelak stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, six assists, a block, and two steals. Amaya Hamilton led Duquesne off the glass with eight boards.
FIRST QUARTER
- Both teams struggled to put points on the scoreboard to begin the game.
- With the score tied at 2-2 with 4:26 to go in the period, Dayton found its rhythm and posted a 12-3 run to grab a 14-5 lead.
- A Paige Cannon layup with four seconds remaining cut the deficit to seven, as Dayton led 14-7 after the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- The Flyers slowly built a 14-point lead at 25-11 with 3:38 left in the half.
- Duquesne trimmed the deficit to single digits with under a minute to go, following a 7-2 sprint from the Dukes.
- A pair of Flyer free throws with just a few ticks of clock remaining gifted Dayton a 29-18 halftime advantage.
- Precious Johnson registered seven of Duquesne's 11 points in the quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
- Dayton held Duquesne to six points in the third frame, increasing its 11-point lead to 19 (43-24) at the end of the third.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Dayton upped its lead to a game-high 24 points (48-24) out of the gate in the fourth.
- With the scoreboard reading 52-28 in favor of the Flyers, Duquesne posted a 13-0 run.
- Johnson poured in seven points in the scoring surge, while Kiersten Elliott swished a triple and Amaya Hamilton scored three points.
- The Flyers connected on a jumper with 14 seconds left for the final points in the game, as Dayton won its sixth consecutive game with a 54-41 victory.
UP NEXT
- The Dukes will have a quick turnaround, as Duquesne faces Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia on Saturday at noon. The contest between the Dukes and Hawks will be broadcasted nationally on CBS Sports Network.
- Duquesne will then return home on Wednesday, Jan. 22 to battle George Mason at La Roche University.
