AMHERST, Mass. – Chassidy Omogrosso scored a game-high 23 points and broke the school record for career 3-pointers, but Massachusetts was able to hold off a late Duquesne comeback to come away with a 69-66 victory on Thursday night.
Amanda Kalin had a career-high 17 points and Kardi-Ann Lass added 12 for the Dukes 11-11, 5-4 A-10)
Hailey Leidel led UMass (12-11, 4-5 A-10) with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica George and Vashnie Perry scored 11 apiece for the Minutewomen.
Down 14-7, the Dukes scored eight straight points to take a 15-14 lead before Destiney Philoxy's layup closed out the 1
st quarter scoring.
Omogrosso opened up the 2
nd quarter with a 3-pointer to give the Dukes an 18-16 advantage. They would hold the lead the rest of the quarter and finished on an 8-2 run to go into halftime ahead 34-25.
With the Dukes up by eight points, the Minutewomen rattled off nine straight points to take a 39-38 lead at 4:51 of the 3
rd quarter. However, the lead lasted only 13 seconds as Omogrosso's 3-pointer put the Dukes back in front heading into the media timeout. However, the Dukes finished the quarter with only one more field goal and seven empty possessions as the Minutewomen took a 54-43 lead into the final quarter.
UMass' lead would get as many as 14 points – twice before a pair of
Libby Bazelak foul shots cut the deficit to six points at 59-53 with 4:33 remaining. Down by five with 32 second to play, Bazelak made the first of two free throws.
Halle Bovell grabbed the rebound off the miss on the second free throw and
Amanda Kalin converted a 3-pointer with 25.9 seconds left, making it a one point contest at 67-66. Leidel was fouled and hit both of her shots with 23 seconds remaining. The Dukes had the ball with hopes of tying the game, but could not get off a 3-point attempt.
