Overtime Thriller

Dukes defeat first place VCU 71-68

PITTSBURGH – Chassidy Omogrosso's 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds remaining send the game into overtime and the Dukes led for the final 4:15 in overtime in their 71-68 victory over first-place VCU on Saturday afternoon.
 
Omogrosso finished with a game-high 21 points and Julijana Vojinovic added 12 for the Dukes (15-12, 9-5 A-10).
 
Danielle Hammond led the Rams (20-7, 12-2 A-10) with 15 points off the bench.
 
The 1st quarter saw three ties and four lead changes before Angela Staffileno's buzzer beater tied the game at 16-16.  Vojinovic's 3-pointer gave the Dukes a six point lead at the 6:39 mark of the 2nd quarter at 26-20. However, Duquesne would go scoreless for the final 2:47 of the quarter and VCU took a 35-32 lead into halftime.
 
The Rams would increase their lead to seven points on Olga Petrova's jumper, which made the score 49-42 at 2:31. VCU would stay in control of the game, leading by eight points with 2:02 remaining in regulation. But the Dukes would hold the Rams without a field goal the rest of regulation, closing the final 1:41 on a 10-2 run to send the game into overtime.
 
In the extra period, Conor Richardson's 3-pointer at 4:15 put Duquesne ahead for good.

GAME NOTES
  • Halle Bovell had a career-high nine rebounds
  • Omogrosso pass April Robinson to move into fourth place on Duquesne's all-time scoring list
  • Vojinovic passed Chrissi Stough, Katie Collins and is now tied with Aiga Bautre for 19th place on Duquesne's all-time scoring list
  • The Dukes have won six straight over the Rams dating back to Jan. 22, 2014
