GENEVA, Ohio - The defending Atlantic 10 champion Duquesne swimming and diving team collected a pair of medals in the first two events of the 2019 A-10 Championship on Wednesday night as the Dukes claimed an early lead over the field at the SPIRE Institute.
The Duquesne 800-yard freestyle relay team of
Emma Brinton,
Hanna Everhart,
Lauren Devorace,
Carson Gross shattered the school record in the event with a mark of 7:15.69 to earn a gold medal.
This time bested the previous school record of 7:18.71 set by
Lexi Santer, Devorace, Gross and
Heather Svitavsky at last year's championship. It was also just .26 seconds off the A-10, meet and pool record in the event.
The Dukes' 200-yard medley relay team of
Audrey Steen,
Abigail Stauffer,
Kristen McKnight and
Emily Thirion posted a bronze-medal showing with a mark of 1:41.39 to kick off the 2019 championship meet.
Duquesne tallied 72 points followed by Fordham second with 70 and George Washington third with 66.
The Dukes are back in action with day two of competition beginning with the prelims at 10 a.m. from SPIRE. Tomorrow's events include the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 1-meter diving and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
