LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Duquesne swimming and diving team recorded a second-place finish out of nine teams at the Liberty TYR '85 Invite over the weekend at the Liberty Natatorium.
The Dukes tallied 1481.5 points across the three-day event, besting Southeast Conference (SEC) member Vanderbilt in third (1439.5), Marshall fourth (1240) and two-time defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion James Madison fifth (1204.5). Navy won the invitational with a score of 2240.
The Duquesne divers posted a strong showing at the invite, as
Sawyer Weitzel (Celina, Ohio / Celina) set a new school record in the one-meter dive with a score of 260.55, good for second place in the event.
Adrienne White (Gibsonia, Pa. / Hampton), who previously held that one-meter school record of 257.55, placed first in the three-meter dive with a score of 259.45 for the Dukes.
Freshman
Sidney O'Donnell (Solon, Ohio / Solon) finished fifth in both the one-meter (243.20) and three-meter (246.15) dives, in addition to a fourth-place showing in the platform dive with a score of 186.50.
Emma Brinton (Landenberg, Pa. / Avon Grove) placed second in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:24.17 followed by
Emma Menzer (Newark, Del. / Newark Charter) third at 4:24.84.
Lauren Devorace (Rocky River, Ohio / Rocky River) registered a third-place performance in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.92) while
Carson Gross (York, Pa. / York Suburban) finished fifth (4:57.05) in the event.
Gross added a fourth-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.74) followed by Devorace fifth (1:51.92).
Erin Kuhn (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) recorded a fourth-place finish for the Dukes in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:03.99.
Duquesne's 800-yard freestyle relay team with Brinton, Devorace,
Hanna Everhart (Bloomsburg, Pa. / Bloomsburg Area) and Gross posted a third-place time of 7:31.53.
NEXT UP
Duquesne will head to Atlanta, Ga. for USA Winter Nationals on Dec. 5 through Dec. 7 before traveling to the Sunshine State for the Dukes' annual winter training trip to wrap up the 2019 portion of their schedule.
