Off to a Great Start

Dukes win at St. Bonaventure 60-54 in A-10 Opener

OLEAN, N.Y. – Duquesne outscored St. Bonaventure 17-6 in the 3rd quarter en route to a 60-54 victory in the 2019 Atlantic 10 Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.
 
Amanda Kalin scored 12 points and tied her career-high with eight rebounds. Julijana Vojinovic scored 13 off the bench. Kadri-Ann Lass and Angela Staffileno added nine points for the Dukes (7-7, 1-0 A-10).
 
Deja Francis scored a game-high 20 and Mckenna Maycock 13 for the Bonnies (3-11, 0-1 A-10).
 
The Dukes found themselves in an eight point hole at the 2:20 mark of the 1st quarter after a Francis jumper made the score 16-8.
 
Duquesne would battle back, going on a 14-5 run and grabbing their first lead of the game on a Chassidy Omogrosso jumper at 5:32 of the 2nd quarter. A pair of ties and three lead changes followed before Vojinovic's jumper at the buzzer sent the game into halftime with SBU leading 32-31.
 
The 3rd quarter opened with Duquesne on fire. They scored the first 12 points to build a 43-32 lead. Staffileno's free throws put the Dukes ahead by 12 - their largest lead of the game at 48-36.
 
St. Bonaventure battled back in the 4th quarter to come within four points of tying the game twice –the later with 30 seconds remaining. Libby Bazelak and Omogrosso each hit a free throw down the stretch and the Duquesne defense was able to force a pair of Bonnies empty possessions, one turnover and a missed 3-pointer with four seconds left.

  • The Dukes lead the all-time series 38-20
  • Duquesne is 7-3 in their last 10 A-10 openers
  • Kalin also had eight rebounds against Kent State and Penn State this season
