Pitt strikes early, defeats Dukes 2-0

Madaline Gravante scored in the sixth minute and added an insurance goal in the 74th minute to lead Pittsburgh to a 2-0 victory over Duquesne on Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Oakland. The Dukes (2-3) return home to face Morehead State (1-5) on Sunday afternoon at Rooney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Dukes came out of the gates on fire, as Hannah Nguyen turned around a Pitt defender and found a streaking Deena DeBaldo, but her shot was stopped 47 seconds in
  • DeBaldo had another chance in the 17th minute, but her shot went high
  • Abby Losco had an opportunity in the 28th minute, but her shot was wide
  • DeBaldo recorded five of the Dukes' six shots
  • Casey Aunkst, Kayla Winicki and Sarah Wilkinson played all 90 minutes
  • Each team finished with six shots and three corner kicks
  • The teams have split the last four matches in the series

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH AL ALVINE
"It's always a good game when Duquesne plays Pitt – regardless of the venue, regardless of the sport. We were in this match right to end, but that second goal was a backbreaker. We had a great opportunity less than a minute in and really had them on their heels in the first 45, but we came away with nothing to show for it. We're going train tomorrow and get ready for Sunday's game at home."
