PITTSBURGH – Duquesne's November 17 Gotham Classic match-up versus Radford will be played at Akron St. Vincent-St.Mary High School's LeBron James Arena it was announced today.
The game, set for a noon tip, will bring Duquesne head coach
Keith Dambrot back to his hometown - and back to the school he led to back-to-back state championships in 1999-00 and 2000-01.
"It means a lot to have the opportunity to play there," said Dambrot, who coached James as a freshman and sophomore on those two state championship teams. "We won two state titles in my three years. Of course, it wasn't really LeBron James Arena back then," added Dambrot referring to the $1 million dollar upgrade the facility received in 2013 courtesy of James.
"The people at St. Vincent-St. Mary - LeBron and Dru Joyce, Romeo Travis - all of those guys and many more - resurrected my career. My kids went to school there. It is a special place for me. I have a lot of great memories from St. V."
The Dukes are also planning a visit to James' I Promise School, which opened in Akron this summer, as part of their trip.
"With the amount of respect I have for LeBron as a person and as a player, I just wanted to show our appreciation for what he's done for us throughout the years," said Dambrot. "This is just a small way to try to give back."
Dambrot, an Akron native, led the University of Akron - his alma mater - to 305 wins and three NCAA Tournament appearances in 13 seasons prior to moving on to Duquesne.
The move of the home game was necessitated by the NCAA Division III volleyball national championship which will be played at Duquesne's on-campus A.J. Palumbo Center November 15-17.
The LeBron James Arena seats 1,800.
