Former DU Swimmer Ian Walsh Named Assistant at Cal

April 19, 2016

Former Duquesne University swimmer Ian Walsh '10 has been named an assistant coach for the California Golden Bears women's swimming team. Walsh joins the Cal staff after serving as an assistant at Marshall for the past three seasons.

Cal finished third at the 2016 NCAA Championships and has claimed four national team titles since 2009. The Golden Bears are the only program in the country to place among the top three in the nation each of the past eight seasons.

"Since his time here at Duquesne, Ian has always been a hardworking, loyal individual," said head coach David Sheets. "He always wanted to be the best and put in the extra time to do that. When he decided he wanted to choose coaching as a career path I knew he would excel. He has gotten where he is today through learning, enthusiasm, hard work and loyalty. Ian has been fortunate to work with some great coaches that have mentored him along the way. Coach McKeever will add to that list and continue to help Ian develop as a coach and person. He is a student of the sport and loves learning about not just the training aspects of swimming but all of the other factors that define a quality coach. Cal and the swimming program are very fortunate to have Ian joining their staff. Duquesne Swimming wishes him the best as he begins this new chapter of his career."

While at Duquesne, Walsh set school records in the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes and was a member of two medley relays that set school marks as well. He also won the Atlantic 10 title in the 100 breaststroke in 2009.
