Szamosi Leads Hungary to Silver at FIBA U20 European Championship

SOFIA, Bulgaria - Hungary closed out the 2014 FIBA U20 European Women's Championship with eight straight wins, finishing second place. Their only setback was a 79-71 loss in the event's first game to gold medal winner Germany.

Hungary faced Norway on July 11th. After a tight two quarters, Hungary exploded in the 2nd half, outscoring Norway 25-12 in Quarter 3 and 25-8 in Quarter 4 for an 85-51 victory. Szamosi led all scorers with 21 points and all rebounders with 11 - all in 24 minutes of play. Szamosi was 9-for-12 from the floor.

The following day, Hungary took on Great Britain. After trailing 19-18 at the end Quarter 1, the Hungarians outscored GB 21-10 in Quarter 2 to take a 10-point lead into halftime. They kept the offense rolling, outscoring Great Britain 24-14 in Quarter 3 and 16-13 in Quarter 4. The 79-56 victory ensured Hungary of promotion from the U20 European Championship Women Division B. Szamosi finished with 10 points in the win.

The final game of the event was against Bulgaria and Szamosi saved her best for last. She scored a team tournament-best 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting and six rebounds in Hungary's 89-64 victory. Hungary came out of the gates hot, finishing Quarter 1 with a 27-8 lead. Despite a Quarter 3 comeback, the Hungarian lead never fell below eight points.

For the event, Szamosi averaged 16.9 points per game, 8.0 rebounds per game and 3.0 steals per game. She finished with three double-doubles and made 56.5 percent of her shots. Hungary led all 10 teams averaging 77.6 points per game.
