PITTSBURGH - Allison Foschia recorded a double-double with a match-high 11 kills and 15 digs while hitting .370 to lead the Duquesne volleyball team over the University of Pittsburgh 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-23) in the annual City Match at the Palumbo Center on Tuesday night. This was the Dukes third win over the Panthers in the past four matches - also winning in 2008 and 2009.
Mary Henry had a match-high 37 assists and Patti Abshire led the Dukes with 17 digs. Marah Farage recorded a match-best five blocks. As a team, Duquesne had a 3-set season-best 69 digs.
The first set had 15 ties and the largest lead for either team was an early 4-1 advantage by Duquesne. With Pitt leading 22-21, a Sara Scheirman kill tied the contest at 22-22. The Panthers then committed back-to-back errors giving the Dukes set point at 24-22. Henry's kill gave Duquesne the set win at 25-23.
With Duquesne trailing 7-5 in the second set, the Dukes went on a 7-1 run to take a 12-8 lead. Duquesne would hold onto the lead the rest of the set capped by a Foschia kill to win the set 25-23.
The Dukes trailed 22-19 in the third set before winning six of the next seven points to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
The Dukes start conference play on Friday night against Atlantic 10 newcomer VCU. Match time is at 6:00 p.m.
